Why Meditation Matters:
Science-Backed Benefits for Mind & Body

ANCIENT PRACTICES BACKED BY MODERN SCIENCE FOR STRESS RELIEF, MENTAL CLARITY, AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

An estimated 62 million people in the U.S., roughly 18% of the population, meditate. Scientific research consistently shows that meditation offers profound benefits for both mental and physical health. With a clear, uncluttered mind and an energized, rejuvenated body you can potentially go on to make better decisions in your personal, business and creative life as well as perform better in fitness and sports activities.

MIND
Regular meditation practice can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve sleep quality, reduce symptoms of PTSD and enhance emotional regulation. Studies have found that just 10-20 minutes of daily meditation can create measurable changes in brain structure, increasing gray matter in areas associated with memory, learning, and emotional regulation as well as reducing age-related memory loss.

BODY
Meditation can also help manage chronic pain, reduce inflammation, which is the source of many diseases, boost immune function, and lower blood pressure. For those dealing with trauma, grief, or life transitions that can impact the body and physical vitality, meditation provides gentle tools to process difficult emotions and to find inner stability thereby restoring the mind-body connection.

  • It’s totally normal to have thoughts during meditation and thoughts happen to the most experienced meditators. The goal of meditation is not to stop our thoughts. It is to become aware of the thoughts, let them go and focus on the breath or present moment. Being restless is also normal as the body and mind will begin to release accumulated stress during meditation. If you need a break or a minute to open your eyes, you can do what is best for you in the moment.  There is no wrong way to meditate and anyone can meditate.

  • There are many ways to meditate. Studies show that when we sit with a straight spine, the energy can flow easier through the body. But if you have physical challenges, you can use pillows for support, a comfortable chair or even lie down. Whatever helps you feel calm and relaxed. We also incorporate gentle somatic movement into some of our classes which can help us be mindful and aware of the present moment.

  • You can learn meditation in a single session but developing a practice over time creates the best benefits.
